Celebrating International Women’s Day: reflection, progress, and the road ahead

Writer: Liz CullisLiz Cullis

International Women’s Day is a moment to reflect on the incredible contributions women make to business and the workplace, while acknowledging the challenges that still lie ahead. As a female HR Consultant and business owner, I have been fortunate to experience first-hand the power of female support networks. However, I am also acutely aware that for many women, systemic barriers – such as the gender pay gap and limited opportunities for advancement – remain stubbornly in place. Today, I want to share my reflections on the support I’ve received, the progress we’ve made, and what more needs to be done to ensure a fair and equitable future for women in the workplace.

The power of female support networks

It’s been almost two years since I started my own HR consultancy, and I knew from the outset that there would be challenges involved in leaving behind a multi-national corporate role to ‘go it alone’. One of the most unexpected joys I’ve experienced on this journey has been the unwavering support I’ve received from other women. From fellow female business owners who have shared their experiences and insights, to other HR consultants who have generously offered their knowledge, expertise, and encouragement. Their willingness to uplift, collaborate, and champion each other’s success has reinforced my belief that when women support women, incredible things happen.

I have also been blessed with an incredible network of supportive female family members, friends and former colleagues. They have been my sounding board, my cheerleaders, and my greatest source of encouragement. Whether through late-night pep talks, words of wisdom, or simply their unwavering belief in me, they have played a crucial role in helping me navigate the highs and lows of entrepreneurship.

More recently, I’ve joined the Real World Consultancy’s ‘FoundHER’ Circle, a dynamic network dedicated to empowering female entrepreneurs. Being part of this group provides me with strategic insights, access to resources, and – perhaps most importantly – a community of like-minded women who truly understand the challenges and opportunities of running a business. It is through these spaces that I have been able to grow both professionally and personally.

The challenges ahead

While I have been fortunate to build my own business, I know that many women in still face significant challenges. The gender pay gap remains a pressing issue. In the UK, women on average earn less than men for equivalent roles in almost every industry. Despite increasing awareness and legislative efforts, the pace of change remains slow. Transparency in pay structures, enhanced parental leave policies and stronger measures to combat unconscious bias are all crucial in bridging this gap.

To truly level the playing field, businesses must go beyond just paying lip service to gender equality. That means creating pathways for women to take on leadership roles, actively mentoring and sponsoring female talent, and ensuring that flexible working arrangements don’t hinder career progression. It also means fostering a culture where women’s contributions are recognised and valued equally to their male counterparts.

As we celebrate International Women’s Day, I encourage all businesses to reflect on what more they can do to support women, not just today, but every day. For my part, I remain committed to using my platform within the HR space to advocate for fairness, champion female talent, and ensure that the workplaces of tomorrow are truly inclusive.

Here’s to all the incredible women – past, present, and future – who continue to inspire, challenge, and drive change. Together, we can and will create a more equitable world. Happy International Women’s Day!
